One weekend in February, I went to the Warhol exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. He is not an artist I particularly like, but seeing his work after a long time has somehow put it more in context, and it has become more relevant to me. I didn’t used to like the off center screen prints in lurid colours, but seeing them now, they say something about the throw away society of today, where everything is not quite perfect. He was a relentless socialite himself, who even had a double who went to parties in California while he was in New York, in order to give the impression that he was “everywhere”. He was in fact a very driven and ambitious person who took photographs of celebrities and turned them into ‘art’ by way of silk screens. It got to the stage where they all wanted a picture of themselves because other celebs had them, which was a clever way of marketing himself. It has also meant that the pictures have extra value as they are of personalities who people are interested in. The exhibition is not large but very interesting and really puts his work in perspective. The works are mainly portraits, but there are other subjects including so called religious works, although these are not good. Well worth seeing.
